Shopify (SHOP) has unveiled a groundbreaking integration that enables its merchant base to conduct sales directly within ChatGPT’s interface, marking a significant expansion of the company’s artificial intelligence commerce strategy.
$SHOP just gave 5.6 million merchants distribution channel that reaches 880 million monthly active users.
That's not a partnership announcement. That's infrastructure.

This functionality operates through Shopify’s Agentic Storefront platform, which debuted in December. The system establishes connections between merchant inventory and AI-powered platforms, enabling consumers to explore and purchase products without exiting their conversational interface.
ChatGPT users now have access to browse merchandise from Shopify’s extensive merchant network, evaluate different products, and finalize transactions through an integrated browser. Desktop users experience checkout through a redirect to the merchant’s native storefront.
According to Shopify, merchants won’t face additional transaction charges beyond their existing processing fees. Each order appears in the merchant’s administrative dashboard with clear ChatGPT referral tracking, providing transparency about sales sources.
The company emphasizes that transactions will bypass ChatGPT’s proprietary Instant Checkout system. All purchases flow exclusively through Shopify’s checkout and payment processing framework, ensuring merchants maintain their status as the official “merchant of record.”
Full Data Ownership Remains with Merchants
This arrangement carries significant implications. Merchants preserve complete authority over customer relationships and information, regardless of whether transactions begin within a ChatGPT dialogue.
“Shopping in ChatGPT begins with discovery,” explained Neel Ajjarapu, Commerce Product Lead at OpenAI. “By integrating products from Shopify’s entire merchant ecosystem, we’re making millions of merchants and billions of products instantly more discoverable.”
Mani Fazeli, Vice President of Product at Shopify, noted the company’s long-term preparation for this moment. “Agentic commerce isn’t something we’re reacting to; it’s a vision we’re bringing to life at the very frontier of commerce and AI.”
The ChatGPT capability represents the most recent expansion in a suite that encompasses Microsoft Copilot alongside Google’s AI Mode and Gemini application. According to Shopify, thousands of merchants have already begun processing sales through Copilot.
Agentic Subscription Tier Welcomes External Brands
Shopify has simultaneously announced the public availability of its Agentic subscription tier, designed specifically for companies operating outside Shopify’s primary e-commerce ecosystem.
This subscription model permits brands to integrate their product catalogs into Shopify Catalog and achieve visibility across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, the Gemini app, and Shop App — all without migrating their entire e-commerce infrastructure to Shopify.
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open framework developed collaboratively with Google, powers the Google-related integrations. Major retail and financial institutions including Walmart, Target, Etsy, American Express, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa have endorsed this protocol.
Fenty Beauty has joined as an early adopter of the platform. “Shopify puts Fenty Beauty in the conversations shoppers are already having,” stated Sapna Shah Parikh, SVP Global Marketing at Fenty Beauty Brands at Kendo.
Shop Pay integration is scheduled to arrive on Microsoft Copilot in the near future, enabling customers to complete purchases entirely within that ecosystem.
Shopify confirmed that product catalogs synchronize instantaneously across all AI distribution channels, eliminating requirements for multiple applications or disconnected data management systems.
