BMW has officially revealed its completely redesigned all-electric i3 sedan Wednesday, representing the second vehicle to emerge from the automaker’s forward-looking Neue Klasse architecture.

The announcement represents a clear challenge to Tesla’s Model 3 portfolio, with BMW making no attempt to disguise its competitive intentions.
Initially available as the 50 xDrive configuration exclusively, the vehicle features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain delivering 469 horsepower. While Tesla’s Model 3 Performance generates 510 horsepower, giving it a slight edge in raw output, BMW counters with a different competitive advantage.
The German manufacturer projects 900 kilometers of range under European WLTP testing protocols, which corresponds to approximately 440 miles using EPA measurement standards. This would substantially exceed the Tesla Model 3 Performance’s EPA-rated 309 miles, and surpass even the Model 3 Premium’s 363-mile capacity.
Additionally, the i3 supports rapid charging capability, adding approximately 250 miles of range during a brief 10-minute charging session, enabled by its advanced 800-volt electrical architecture and sixth-generation eDrive powertrain technology. BMW targets a 0-60 mph acceleration time of approximately four seconds.
Cabin Design and Advanced Features
The interior features a completely reimagined cockpit centered around an expansive 40-inch panoramic display spanning the dashboard width. The enhanced iDrive interface operates on BMW’s newly developed Heart of Joy computing architecture, delivering processing speeds ten times faster than preceding generations.
Dimensionally, the new i3 expands beyond the current 3 Series — offering increased length, width, and height — while its exterior styling language provides insight into the upcoming gasoline-powered 3 Series design direction.
Official US market pricing remains unannounced, though BMW is projected to position the i3 near $55,000. This places it above the Model 3 Premium AWD’s approximate $47,490 starting price, but aligned with the Model 3 Performance’s $54,990 entry point.
Manufacturing Schedule and American Market Launch
Manufacturing operations will launch at BMW’s Munich manufacturing facility in August 2026. While European customers can expect deliveries beginning autumn 2026, American buyers face an extended timeline — US market deliveries aren’t anticipated before 2027.
BMW has verified that supplementary variants will arrive subsequently, including a high-performance all-electric M3 version. The i3 sedan and iX3 crossover represent components of an extensive Neue Klasse introduction encompassing four additional forthcoming models.
The automaker has characterized the Neue Klasse initiative as the most substantial capital investment in the company’s entire history.
In equity markets, Wall Street analysts maintain a Hold rating consensus on BAMXF stock derived from five Buy recommendations, five Hold ratings, and three Sell opinions recorded during the previous three months.
