On Thursday, OpenAI revealed plans to acquire Astral, a well-regarded startup specializing in open source development tools designed for Python programmers.
We've reached an agreement to acquire Astral.
After we close, OpenAI plans for @astral_sh to join our Codex team, with a continued focus on building great tools and advancing the shared mission of making developers more productive.https://t.co/V0rDo0G8h9

The acquisition will see Astral’s team members integrated into OpenAI’s operations, specifically contributing to Codex, the company’s AI-powered coding platform. Details regarding the purchase price have not been made public.
Within the Python development ecosystem, Astral has established considerable credibility. The company’s suite of tools focuses on enhancing both performance and dependability throughout the code-writing process.
In a blog announcement, Charlie Marsh, who founded and leads Astral as CEO, emphasized continuity in the company’s mission. “Our objective remains unchanged: to enhance programming productivity and create tools that fundamentally transform the software development experience,” Marsh stated.
Marsh provided assurance that Astral’s open source projects will maintain their support structure once the acquisition finalizes.
OpenAI introduced its Codex offering in the previous year and rolled out a dedicated desktop application in early 2026. According to company statistics, Codex currently serves over 2 million active users on a weekly basis.
This user count reflects triple the volume recorded at the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, actual usage metrics have climbed by a factor of five during the identical timeframe.
Strategic Move Against Anthropic and Cursor in Developer Tools Space
The market for AI-enhanced coding platforms has experienced rapid expansion throughout the past twelve months. OpenAI finds itself in direct competition with Anthropic, whose Claude Code solution has captured significant developer mindshare.
Another competitive force comes from Cursor, which has cultivated a dedicated user base within the software engineering community. OpenAI aims to expand Codex’s market presence and narrow the competitive distance.
Completion of the Astral transaction depends on standard closing requirements, including obtaining necessary regulatory approvals.
This transaction represents one element of OpenAI’s broader acquisition strategy. The organization brought on Albert Lee from Google this past December to oversee corporate development initiatives.
Expanding Acquisition Portfolio
In May 2025, OpenAI finalized a substantial $6.4 billion purchase of io, Jony Ive’s AI hardware venture. More recently this month, the company announced its intention to acquire Promptfoo, a cybersecurity-focused startup.
January saw OpenAI complete the acquisition of Torch, a health technology company. The Astral transaction extends this acquisition pattern.
Microsoft serves as a key backer of OpenAI. The company has been broadening its product portfolio while navigating intensifying competition throughout the artificial intelligence sector.
This latest acquisition of Astral represents a targeted effort to reinforce OpenAI’s capabilities specifically within AI-assisted development tools.
The five-fold increase in Codex usage since the start of the year stands as the most current performance metric OpenAI has publicly disclosed regarding the platform’s expansion.
