- The timeframe from April to early May represents a “crucial” period for verification testing
Apple’s inaugural venture into foldable smartphones is encountering unexpected obstacles. A report from Nikkei Asia on Monday revealed that the device is experiencing technical complications during prototype production, potentially delaying the product launch by several months.
Several industry insiders informed Nikkei that the technical hurdles prove more intricate than Apple originally projected. According to one insider: “It’s accurate that the preliminary testing phase has surfaced more complications than anticipated, requiring additional time for resolution.”
The foldable device was slated for inclusion in Apple’s premium product release scheduled for the latter half of 2026, launching alongside two traditional models boasting enhanced camera systems and expanded screen dimensions.
Apple has remained silent regarding the report. Reuters was unable to confirm the information through independent verification.
The schedule remains challenging. An insider characterized the period spanning April through early May as “exceptionally crucial” for verification testing procedures. Outcomes during this window could dictate whether the product maintains its current timeline or experiences further postponements.
Notifications about potential production timeline modifications have reached certain component manufacturers, though not all suppliers. This indicates Apple is already adjusting internal expectations, despite the absence of official public statements.
Root Causes Behind the Postponement
Notably, one source dismissed speculation that semiconductor or component supply constraints are responsible. Instead, they identified pure engineering obstacles — specifically the structural and design complexities inherent in creating Apple’s maiden foldable device.
“Both Apple and its supply partners are operating under demanding deadlines, and existing solutions haven’t fully addressed the engineering obstacles,” the source explained.
Apple had previously modified its comprehensive 2026 iPhone manufacturing approach earlier this year. The company delayed production of its baseline iPhone variant until early 2027 to concentrate resources on high-end models and navigate limited availability of memory components and other critical materials.
Placing the Foldable iPhone in Perspective
Apple’s preliminary manufacturing target stands at approximately 7 to 8 million foldable units — representing under 10% of its projected total new iPhone production capacity for 2026.
Samsung and Huawei entered the foldable smartphone sector back in 2019, accumulating years of practical expertise that Apple is now attempting to replicate with its debut offering.
Shares decreased 4.3% during Monday’s morning trading session after the Nikkei publication.
