The reveal took place Wednesday, with Visa characterizing the solution as an accessible gateway for AI developers and retailers that remains neutral across networks, protocols, and token storage systems.
The infrastructure empowers AI agents to explore available merchandise, make selections, and finalize transactions entirely without human intervention during payment processing.
Retailers participating in the ecosystem have their product offerings indexed and made searchable within AI environments. This allows consumer-facing AI assistants to locate and acquire items from participating vendors automatically.
The solution manages card tokenization, expenditure limitations, identity verification, and Payment Card Industry compliance standards. Retailers can participate without rebuilding their current systems, as integration occurs through a unified connection to the Visa Acceptance Platform.
Intelligent Commerce Connect accommodates Visa-issued cards alongside alternative payment methods. The platform also maintains compatibility with established AI agent communication standards.
Managing Autonomous Spending Limits
Consumers can register their Visa payment card and establish parameters governing AI agent spending authority. The artificial intelligence system then functions autonomously within those predetermined boundaries.
This framework ensures consumers maintain financial oversight while enabling AI technologies to execute purchases independently. Retailers process payments through their current merchant services without additional complexity.
The system currently operates in a limited pilot program involving select partners. Visa has scheduled a comprehensive launch for the latter part of 2026.
This initiative marks another step in Visa’s AI payment journey. Earlier this year in March, the corporation introduced Visa CLI, an experimental tool enabling AI agents to execute same-day financial transfers.
Integration with Nevermined and x402
Nevermined, a financial technology company specializing in AI applications, has successfully connected with Intelligent Commerce Connect. The integration leverages Coinbase’s x402 communication protocol.
The x402 framework provides AI agents with a uniform method for initiating payment requests with merchants through automated processes. Erik Reppel, who developed x402, explained the protocol functions in conjunction with protected card systems to facilitate authentic business transactions between AI entities and retail platforms.
Data from the protocol’s official website indicates x402 has handled $24 million in total transaction activity during the previous 30-day period.
Blockchain ecosystems such as Ethereum, Tron, and Solana have simultaneously developed infrastructure supporting AI agent commerce capabilities. Visa’s platform positions the company as a direct competitor to these decentralized initiatives.
The comprehensive deployment of Intelligent Commerce Connect remains on track for late 2026, with additional partnership announcements anticipated throughout the pilot testing period.
