Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, distributed an internal communication to employees over the weekend, commending the organization’s recent Amazon collaboration while suggesting the established Microsoft relationship has constrained corporate growth.

The communication, obtained by CNBC, surfaced approximately six weeks following Amazon’s announcement of plans to commit up to $50 billion to OpenAI through a strategic alliance.
“Our Microsoft partnership has been foundational to our success. But it has also limited our ability to meet enterprises where they are — for many that’s Bedrock,” Dresser wrote.
Amazon Web Services’ Bedrock platform provides enterprises with access to leading AI models, including OpenAI’s offerings, via a unified cloud infrastructure. OpenAI reported that interest following the Amazon partnership announcement has been “frankly staggering.”
Microsoft has committed over $13 billion to OpenAI beginning in 2019. While both parties characterize the partnership as fundamental and strategic, they have increasingly ventured into overlapping markets. Microsoft designated OpenAI among its competitive threats in a 2024 annual filing.
OpenAI has begun collaborating with alternative cloud infrastructure providers such as CoreWeave, Google, and Oracle to secure additional computational resources.
Enterprise Battle Heats Up
OpenAI is aggressively pursuing the enterprise sector, where Anthropic’s Claude platform has established significant market presence. Google Gemini is similarly competing vigorously for corporate clients.
Dresser informed CNBC earlier this month that enterprise operations currently generate 40% of OpenAI’s overall revenue. She projected this segment will match the consumer division by year-end.
During the HumanX AI industry conference in San Francisco last week, Glean CEO Arvind Jain described Anthropic’s Claude as “Claude mania,” stating “it has become a religion.”
OpenAI Takes Aim at Anthropic
Dresser leveraged the memo to directly challenge Anthropic, characterizing its approach as rooted in “fear, restriction, and the idea that a small group of elites should control AI.”
She further suggested Anthropic committed a “strategic misstep to not acquire enough compute.” A separate OpenAI communication to investors on Thursday indicated Anthropic is “operating on a meaningfully smaller curve.”
Anthropic disclosed a computational infrastructure agreement with Google and Broadcom for “multiple gigawatts” earlier this month.
OpenAI achieved a valuation exceeding $850 billion during a late March capital raise. Anthropic secured a $380 billion valuation one month prior. Both organizations are considering potential public offerings this year.
Dresser joined as chief revenue officer in December. Her previous experience includes serving as CEO of Slack and executive positions at Salesforce.
She concluded the memo by instructing employees: “The market is ours to win, let’s execute accordingly.”
