American Express has announced its intention to acquire Hyper, an artificial intelligence-powered expense management firm established in 2022 with backing from OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman. This strategic acquisition aligns with AmEx’s broader initiative to integrate advanced automation into its business offerings.

Hyper specializes in developing AI-powered agents designed to streamline expense management tasks—automatically organizing expenditures, generating reports, validating submissions against corporate budgets and guidelines, and sending reminders to staff about approaching deadlines.
The partnership between these organizations isn’t new. Last year, they joined forces to introduce the Hypercard Rewards American Express card, featuring integrated AI expense capabilities built on AmEx’s Agile Partner Platform.
The current acquisition represents a significant evolution of their existing collaboration, integrating Hyper’s innovative technology directly into AmEx’s core infrastructure.
The companies have not revealed the financial details of the agreement. Completion of the acquisition is projected for the second quarter of 2026, pending customary regulatory approvals and closing requirements.
Expanding Commercial Services
AmEx has been steadily expanding its commercial division. Just last month, the company unveiled a new business credit card featuring cashback incentives and premium benefits, carrying a $295 yearly membership fee.
Additional card products are on the company’s roadmap for later in 2025.
In his recent communication to investors, AmEx CEO Stephen Squeri characterized artificial intelligence as driving a “structural shift” across business operations. The Hyper acquisition exemplifies this strategic vision.

This automated compliance functionality has become increasingly critical for organizations handling substantial volumes of employee expenditures across multiple departments.
AmEx has indicated plans to unveil a comprehensive AI-driven expense management platform later this year, featuring advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. Hyper’s technological infrastructure is anticipated to be central to this product launch.
AXP stock experienced modest movement after the announcement, declining approximately 0.69% during trading.
