Key Highlights
- Google plans to provide construction financing for a massive Texas data center currently under lease to Anthropic
- Nexus Data Centers is developing the $5B+ facility, with construction funding expected to close within weeks
- The sprawling 2,800-acre complex aims to provide approximately 500 megawatts of power by the end of 2026, with potential expansion to ~7.7 gigawatts
- Independent gas turbines powered by regional pipelines will supply energy, minimizing reliance on the electrical grid
- Alphabet’s strong financial standing is anticipated to attract more favorable bank financing terms for the project
Google is preparing to finance construction of a Texas-based data center exceeding $5 billion in value, developed by Nexus Data Centers and already committed to AI company Anthropic through a lease agreement.

According to initial reporting from the Financial Times, sources familiar with the arrangement indicate that loan agreements should reach completion in the near future.
Rather than constructing the infrastructure directly, Alphabet is stepping in as a financial partner, leveraging its robust credit rating to secure more competitive lending terms from participating banks.
Multiple banking institutions are currently vying to provide funding for the initial construction phase, with deals potentially closing by mid-2025.
Spanning 2,800 acres, the data center is engineered to supply roughly 500 megawatts of computing power by the fourth quarter of 2026. Over time, the operation could expand dramatically to about 7.7 gigawatts — representing significant capacity for artificial intelligence computational demands.
Anthropic formalized its leasing arrangement with Nexus Data Centers in recent weeks.
Independent Energy Infrastructure Strategy
The facility’s strategic positioning near multiple major natural gas pipelines serves a critical purpose. Nexus intends to operate the center using dedicated gas turbine generators instead of drawing from the regional power grid.
This approach allows the operation to avoid premium electricity costs during periods of high demand — an increasingly important consideration for data centers running intensive AI computations continuously.
The energy independence also provides greater operational control, addressing a challenge that has complicated numerous large-scale data center developments.
Expanding Google’s Partnership with Anthropic
Google currently provides Anthropic with specialized TPU infrastructure via Google Cloud for training its advanced language models.
This arrangement creates mutual advantages: Anthropic secures essential computing resources at scale, while Google reinforces its Vertex AI platform capabilities through the collaboration.
By financing the Texas facility, Google is expanding its role beyond cloud provider to become an infrastructure investor in Anthropic’s growth.
Specific financial terms of the construction financing arrangement — including total loan value and interest rates — remain undisclosed.
Nexus Data Centers has not issued public statements regarding the project. Anthropic completed its lease agreement with Nexus in early May, with construction financing expected to finalize shortly.
