Earlier this year, Apple announced at its WWDC event that it would bring a Digital Legacy Program for iPhone users. With the release of iOS 15.2 Beta 2, the company has now introduced Legacy Contacts in the iCloud Settings. This new option allows iPhone users to add one or more contacts as Legacy Contacts to be able to access and download certain data in iCloud after their death.
The new Legacy Contacts option is rolling out for iPhone users with the latest iOS 15.2 beta update. As aforementioned, Apple’s Digital Legacy program allows iPhone users to designate up to five contacts as Legacy Contacts. These contacts can access the deceased person’s iCloud data after providing Apple a death certificate and an access key. At present, the iCloud data of a deceased person goes with them even with a death certificate. However, the new update brings this new feature to allow users to add Legacy Contacts on their devices, such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Apple’s Digital Legacy Program: How to Add Legacy Contacts on iPhone
As said before, iPhone users can add up to five contacts as Legacy Contacts. These Legacy Contacts, after providing proof of death and an access key, will automatically get access to certain iCloud data. So, if your designated contacts have the required access key and provide the proof of death to Apple, they will automatically obtain access to certain data stored in your iCloud account. Here’s how you can add Legacy Contacts on your iPhone:
First off, go to your iPhone’s Settings and tap [your name]. Next, select Password & Security and look for Legacy Contact. If you’re a Mac user, go to System Preferences » Apple ID » Password & Security. Now follow the instructions to add a Legacy Contact.
