A new iPad Pro is rumored to be coming next month, and ahead of its launch, references about a new “A14X” chip have been found in the iOS 14.5 code. 9to5Mac reports that references about a new A14X processor have appeared in the iOS code, the fifth beta version of which Apple recently released to developers and public beta testers.
According to the report, the iOS 14.5 code includes references to a GPU from 13G, a chip that’s not currently used by any available iOS device. 13G is reportedly a codename for a variant of the A14 Bionic chip — the A14X SoC. The report also claims that the A14X chip is based on T8103, which is allegedly the “codename for the Apple M1 chip used in the first Apple Silicon Macs.” Recently, a Bloomberg report had also claimed that the next-generation iPad Pro will use “an updated processor that is on par with the faster M1 Chip,” suggesting the new information is more reliable.
iPad Pro Will Feature the A14X Chip?
According to the rumors, the only new iOS device that’s coming in the first half of 2021 is the next-generation iPad Pro. So, the A14X chip does not seem to be destined for some other device but power the new iPad Pro. The 9to5Mac report also claims to have learned the code names for the new iPads, which seemingly are J517, J518, J522, and J523. Further, the new references to the A14X chip in iOS 14.5 hint that the upcoming next-generation iPad Pro launch is not too far. If rumors are to be believed, Apple could announce the new iPad Pro models as early as April.
The new iPad Pro device is expected to feature a Mini-LED display for the 12.9-inch model and come with better cameras and a Thunderbolt port. Note that these are just rumors and speculations, and the exact specifications of the next-generation iPad Pro models may be different.
