The Apple Spring Loaded 2021 event held virtually on April 20 gave us many products including a purple iPhone 12, a new iMac with M1 chipset, and yes, the updated Apple TV 4K. First things first, there’s no change in the form factor and prices are virtually the same. With that being said, the Apple TV 4K is now getting an Apple A12 Bionic chipset under the hood which is a massive upgrade from 2017 introduced Apple TV 4K with an A10X chipset.
Upgraded Apple TV 4K Introduced with a new Siri Remote
Talking about the latest Apple TV 4K, this is a second-generation of the hardware that now runs on the A12 Bionic chipset that made its debut with iPhone XS in 2018. The new chipset allows playback for Dolby Vision and HDR videos at a whopping 60 frames per second. The new Apple TV 4K now has a new color calibration feature. Further, it uses Face ID on iPhones running iOS 14.5 and above to adjust and calibrate the colors on the Apple TV.
One of the massive upgrades with the Apple TV 4K is with the image processing that now upscales the 1080p video content to 4K HDR displays. You can play games on your Apple TV 4K where the A12 Bionic chipset has proven improvements in both user experience and graphics. The Cupertino-based giant has also added a string of titles on Apple Arcade that users can play on their Apple 4K TV devices without any hassle. This is to highlight that some of the games that ran on 4K resolution were unable to render to their extent on the previously used A10X chipset.
If that’s not enough. Gone is the old remote and now, you get an aluminum body Siri Remote that has a direction ring at the center that allows you unparalleled control on the Apple TV devices using the touch-sensitive jog control.
The new remote is a bit thicker than its predecessor and certainly not compatible with Find My app which is a little upsetting. This means you cannot slap an Apple AirTag in case if you lose it somewhere.
Talking about the pricing, the new Apple TV 4K will be available for pre-order on April 30 while the shipping will commence after mid-May. The 32GB variant is available at $179 while the 64GB variant is one sale at $199. You can still get the old Apple TV HD with the new Siri Remote at $149.
