March proved to be an exceptionally active period for Marvell. The semiconductor manufacturer posted results that exceeded expectations while simultaneously securing a game-changing agreement with Nvidia.
Marvell Technology, Inc., MRVL
The fourth-quarter performance was impressive across the board. Sales grew 22.1% compared to the prior year, reaching $2.2 billion. Adjusted earnings per share hit $0.80, representing a 33.3% increase. Both metrics surpassed Wall Street’s forecasts.
Forward-looking projections were similarly robust. Company leadership projected a 9% sequential revenue bump for the first quarter, accompanied by adjusted EPS of $0.79. These figures also exceeded analyst expectations.
The more significant announcement, however, emerged toward month’s end. On March 31, Nvidia revealed a $2 billion equity stake in Marvell, coupled with a comprehensive strategic alliance.
The collaboration encompasses custom chip design, networking infrastructure, and optical communication technologies. Central to the partnership is NVLink Fusion, Nvidia’s framework for incorporating external chips into its artificial intelligence infrastructure ecosystem.
The strategic significance lies in the architectural flexibility this creates. Previously, AI infrastructure typically relied exclusively on Nvidia components or alternative custom XPU processors utilizing Ethernet connectivity. This alliance enables hybrid configurations — combining XPUs with Nvidia’s graphics processors, central processing units, and interconnect technologies.
Data Center Revenue Projections Exceed Expectations
Company leadership established ambitious targets for fiscal 2027. Marvell anticipates data center revenue expansion of 40% — substantially higher than the 25% consensus among financial analysts.
This optimism appears rooted in the company’s XPU operations, which supply custom AI chip intellectual property to cloud computing giants. Despite earlier apprehension regarding potential market share erosion at Amazon following the introduction of Amazon’s Trainium processors, the forward guidance indicates a robust XPU development pipeline.
Marvell has simultaneously been broadening its client portfolio. Microsoft introduced its enhanced Maia2 XPU processor in January, incorporating Marvell’s intellectual property into the architecture.
The Nvidia partnership also encompasses silicon photonics — an emerging technology with potential to supplant copper-based networking infrastructure within AI data centers. Given that Nvidia’s existing NVLink technology utilizes copper connections, the collaboration with Marvell indicates a strategic long-term transition toward optical interconnect solutions.
Wall Street Coverage Intensifies
On April 2, Erste Group launched coverage of Marvell with a Buy rating. The investment firm noted that net profits had doubled across the previous five quarters while return on equity climbed to 19%.
Erste also emphasized Marvell’s dominant position in high-performance analog technologies and optical digital signal processing as fundamental drivers behind its favorable assessment.
The Nvidia equity injection propelled Marvell to 52-week peak valuations. The stock had remained largely range-bound throughout much of the preceding six months, but the convergence of stellar earnings and Nvidia’s endorsement triggered a significant breakout.
Marvell presently trades at approximately 27 times forward earnings projections — representing a valuation premium compared to the previous year, though many analysts consider this justified given the anticipated data center expansion trajectory.
The company’s XPU solutions now interface with Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion infrastructure, potentially unlocking additional revenue opportunities throughout Nvidia’s expanding network of hyperscale partners.
