If you are that animated series fan who grew up in the 80s or 90s, you must have heard or watched He-Man at some point in time. Netflix has picked up the animated series after 20 years, as part of the Netflix original series. The person behind He-Man? None other than Kevin Smith, the same guy who brought us some popular titles such as Dogma, Chasing Amy and Clerks.
Although the show was picked way back in 2019, many fans were unsure what to make of it since many of Netflix’s shows such as Princesses of Power took off in an entirely different direction from their original storylines. Having said that, the first glimpse at Masters of the Universe: Revelation tells us that the show is inspired by the original animated series and plans to pick where it left off. The plot will explore several unsolved mysteries and storylines that were left in the dark in the 80s series.
According to Kevin Smith,
Narratively our show is set up as the next episode in the legacy ‘80s animated series that aired from 1983-1985. This is a continuation of that story. We’re playing with the original mythology and characters, and revisiting and digging deeper into some of the unresolved storylines. Visually we also made the conscious decision to lean into the Master of the Universe line of toys for inspiration as well.
Powerhouse Animation, the studio responsible for bringing us the likes of Castlevania and Blood of Zeus, is in charge of the animation. The Masters of the Universe: Revelation has some pretty good cast, with Chris Wood as He-Man, Lena Headey as Evil-Lyn, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela, Alicia Silverstone as Queen Marlena, Steven Root as Battle Cat, and Griffin Newman as Orko. Mark Hamill is lending his voice to the main villain Skeletor.
Smith went on to say,
I watched all of the TV series growing up, it was everywhere in the ‘80s. These characters started off as toys and ended up becoming part of the global pop culture fabric.” He went on to add that “so much of this show has been possible because of the love and affection for this world at every level of production and the fandom surrounding this franchise. A big reason we got such top-tier voice talent is because people genuinely want to be a part of this world. So many of us were touched by these stories and these characters early in our lives and were so happy to come back to Eternia.
