Google Pixel 6, 6 Pro Have Only Three Years of Android OS Updates Guarantee, Not Five

Google launched its latest flagship phone family, the Pixel 6 series, on Tuesday. The series consists of two models, the base Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro. While the devices come with a lot of features already, there was the promise of five years of security updates too.

However, many of the Pixel fans thought that it meant that these phones would get five major Android version updates, but it’s not true. To your disappointment, Google has revealed through its Pixel Phone Help website that the Pixel 6 phones will have only three years of Android version updates guarantee. The figures that emerged through the support website show that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will get Android version updates until 2024 (which is three years) and will get security updates until 2026.

Pixel 6 Will Get Android OS Updates Until 2024

While Google seems to keep its promise of guaranteed security updates for at least 5 years, it will not offer Android version updates for five years as users expected. From the figures on the Pixel Phone Help website, we learn that Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owners will get guaranteed Android version updates until at least October 2024. They, however, can enjoy the security updates for two more years. Earlier, some rumours suggested that the phones would get four major Android version upgrades.

The three-year promise of Android version updates for Pixel 6 translates to Android 13, Android 14, and Android 15. The support page speaks of “guaranteed” upgrades, which leaves the possibility open for further rollouts in the future, but that seems unlikely. Normally, three major Android updates on Android phones are quite good.
