The arson attempt occurred approximately 4 a.m. Pacific time within San Francisco’s Russian Hill district. The individual hurled an improvised incendiary weapon at Altman’s residential property, igniting flames at an external gate structure.

The attack resulted in zero injuries. In an official statement provided to Forbes, OpenAI representatives confirmed the incident while characterizing structural damages as “minimal.”

Law enforcement personnel responded to a follow-up situation approximately sixty minutes afterward. An individual allegedly threatened arson against a structure located in the 1400 block of Third Street. OpenAI maintains its headquarters at 1455 Third Street.

Authorities determined the individual involved in the second threatening incident matched the perpetrator from the earlier residential attack. The suspect remains in custody while formal charges are being prepared. Investigative efforts continue.

OpenAI distributed an internal communication to employees acknowledging both incidents. The organization stated that its San Francisco locations maintained standard operations Friday while enhanced law enforcement and private security measures were implemented surrounding company properties.

“Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters,” an OpenAI spokesperson said. “Thankfully, no one was hurt.”

    CEO Issues Statement Following Incident

Altman published remarks regarding the attack through his personal blog on Friday. He recognized that public skepticism toward the artificial intelligence sector frequently stems from “sincere concern about the incredibly high stakes of this technology.”

“While we have that debate, we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally,” he wrote.

The violent incident followed closely after the New Yorker released an extensive year-long investigative report examining Altman’s conduct. The publication characterized him as a questionable ethical figure within the competitive AI landscape.

    Mounting Challenges for OpenAI’s Leadership

The incident timing coincides with escalating public scrutiny and legal challenges confronting Altman. Elon Musk has additionally pursued Altman’s removal from OpenAI through fraud allegations.

OpenAI representatives confirmed complete cooperation with ongoing law enforcement inquiries. San Francisco Police Department officials indicated Friday that formal charges against the detained individual remain under review.

The individual successfully accessed Altman’s property without documented resistance prior to deploying the incendiary device. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the suspect’s identity or potential motivations as of Friday.
