A defendant shot three individuals and traded gunfire with police in a deadly overnight shootout and standoff in a Super 8 motel in Rockford, Illinois, police said.
The defendant in the shooting barricaded himself within the motel, Rockford Police Chief Daniel O’Shea stated in a news conference near the scene. Authorities forced entry to the area early Sunday and found the defendant dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, O’Shea stated.
Police were called to the motel soon after midnight Saturday in reaction to a report of shots fired. There, they discovered one guy fatally shot and two girls injured with gunshot wounds which weren’t life-threatening, O’Shea said.
Officers found the defendant in the construction, O’Shea stated, and exchanged gunfire, resulting in an elongated standoff. No officers were hurt, he said.
He said police believed the standoff came from a national incident but cautioned that the information had been preliminary.
