Get ready for a revolution. The days of 108MP camera sensors on a smartphone are numbered as reports are pouring in that Xiaomi is allegedly working on a 200 Megapixel sensor. According to the reports, Xiaomi just launched Xiaomi Mi 11X Pro in India with a 108MP Samsung HM2 sensor and now, it is planning to max it up to 200MP. The news around the upcoming 200MP isn’t something new as we already know Samsung is working on a 200MP ISOCELL GN2 sensor for some time now.
Xiaomi and Samsung to roll out 200MP Smartphones
Reputed tipster Digital Chat Station posted the information on Twitter and Weibo (via ITHome). Although he didn’t mention the manufacturer’s name, he did mention that a 200MP camera sensor by an OEM is in the making. Considering the tipster’s affinity towards Xiaomi, it has been summarized that the tipster is actually talking about Xiaomi.
To tally on the previous reports, tipster Ice Universe stated that this 200MP ISOCELL is being manufactured by Samsung with a 0.4-micron pixel size. Now, this is different from the earlier report that suggested a 200MP ISOCELL sensor with 1.28-micron pixel size and a 1/ 1.37-inch sensor size. The alleged sensor supports both 4-in-1 and 16-in-1 pixel binning technology. The sensor will be able to shoot videos at up to 16K resolution which is twice what’s available in the market today.
The 200MP sensor was earlier speculated to arrive with ZTE Axon 30 Pro 5G which didn’t materialize as the device arrived with a tiny 64MP sensor instead. This didn’t stop leaksters and tech websites from cooking up potential products such as the Mark Peters at LetsGoDigital posted a 3D product render of Samsung Galaxy S22 housing a 200MP primary sensor in a concept with Technizo Concept that teased the Olympus camera. Samsung and Olympus could be working together to get the 200MP primary sensor up and running on the upcoming Galaxy S22 device.
If you remember, Samsung shared a tweet teasing the 200MP giant sensor although it didn’t mention any details such as its availability at all. We will have to wait for some time to get a clear indication if it’s Xiaomi or Samsung that will make their first move to 200MP on a commercially available smartphone or if some other OEM snags this opportunity from these two giants.
