HP Inc. introduced HP IQ during Tuesday’s annual Imagine conference held in New York City — a locally-processed AI platform engineered to enhance productivity for professionals managing documents and virtual meetings.
The most interesting announcement so far at the HP event is HP IQ. Until I use it and research it, I won’t render a verdict. Here’s what it is:
∙on-device AI orchestrator for commercial PCs. A unified software layer across EliteBook, ProBook, ZBook, and select desktops that… https://t.co/KIGw7hAOm5— Patrick Moorhead (@PatrickMoorhead) March 24, 2026
The AI assistant manifests as a text input field positioned at the screen’s upper edge. Users can query the system about their personal files — including PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, and various document formats — receiving comprehensive responses. The technology also offers intelligent recommendations for subsequent actions.
Privacy represents the central value proposition. HP IQ operates completely on the device itself, ensuring that processed information never transmits to cloud servers. This approach specifically targets enterprises managing confidential or proprietary data.
“In my view, the two breakthrough applications are document examination and meeting synopsis capabilities, all without cloud dependency,” stated Patrick Moorhead, founder and CEO of Moor Insights & Strategy. “For organizations with proprietary data, or discussions requiring confidentiality, this represents a significant advantage.”
HP IQ utilizes a 20-billion-parameter foundation model and will launch alongside the upcoming HP EliteBook X G2 PC lineup. Initial access begins Spring 2026, followed by a controlled Summer 2026 expansion to select notebooks, desktop systems, and Poly Studio Video Bars. Comprehensive market availability is anticipated during 2026’s latter half.
The Imagine conference showcased multiple new commercial hardware products — including the EliteBook 6 G2q, EliteBook 8 G2 lineup, ProBook 4 G2, and EliteDesk 8 G2 collection. The premier EliteBook 6 G2q features Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Plus chipsets, providing up to 85 TOPS of NPU capability and battery endurance reaching 28 hours.
HP has established partnerships with more than 100 software companies to enable HP IQ’s local AI functionality, including collaborations with Rakuten, Goodnotes, and Guidde.
Will AI Drive HPQ Stock Performance?
Market analysts remain reserved about labeling this announcement an immediate share price driver. Tom Mainelli, Group Vice President of Device and Consumer Research at IDC, expressed approval of the strategic direction while withholding predictions.
“The question of user adoption for these emerging technologies is still unanswered,” Mainelli told Barron’s. “However, I appreciate that HP is exploring innovation beyond conventional approaches.”
The equity has experienced significant headwinds. Beyond the share price deterioration, HP has confronted margin compression from escalating memory component costs and an unforeseen CEO transition in February. Tuesday’s product reveal doesn’t directly address these fundamental challenges.
Apple Faces Mounting Pressure
HP’s strategic initiatives are redirecting attention toward Apple, which announced Monday that its Worldwide Developers Conference returns June 8 and will feature AI enhancements across Apple’s ecosystem.
Moorhead observed that HP’s advancement could intensify examination of Apple’s AI development trajectory. Should HP IQ achieve meaningful user adoption, questions regarding Apple’s absence of comparable on-device capabilities may become increasingly prominent.
To date, Apple has successfully navigated AI-related concerns, maintaining consistent iPhone sales momentum and expanding services revenue. Whether this protective buffer persists through June remains uncertain.
Apple’s WWDC is set for June 8, 2026.
