Marvel has leaped Phase 4. With that, we are seeing some new characters on screen. With a new theme of Multiverse on the frontline, Everything and anything is on the table and Kevin Smith has teased a new character through his podcast Fatman beyond.
Kevin Smith mentioned in his podcast that Marvel previously had plans for a new character Werewolf by Night, on the screen itself. Due to their plans, he was not able to involve this character in his show Howard The Duck which later on was not even picked up by the channel.
Kevin Smith, a well-known Marvel fanboy is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author, and podcaster. He got his shot at popularity with low budget comedy film Clerks (1994). He also owns a comic book store and has co-hosted several shows on his SModcast Podcast Network, some of them including SModcast, Fatman Beyond, and live show Hollywood Babble-on.
He vividly remembers the details of his journey with Howard the Duck that was supposed to be part of Hulu and mentions how he missed out on the opportunity to cast Werewolf by Night on the refusal of Jeph Loeb. A gist of it is mentioned below:
Two years ago when we announced, ‘Hey, we’re gonna be doing Masters of the Universe!’ which is now about to happen, we also announced ‘Hey, we’re gonna be doing Howard the Duck!’ over at Hulu, remember that?” Smith shared with fans. “For a red hot minute, I was working on Howard the Duck and before Dave [Willis, Aqua Teen Hunger Force co-creator] involved, when it was just me, Jeph Loeb was like ‘Hey man, I think you’d be good for Howard the f–king Duck.’ I reached out to Walter Flanagan from Comic Book Men and told him I’m gonna take a stab at all the f–king 70s characters. Walt was giving suggestions and Werewolf By Night was absolutely on the list.
He added,
In my head, as I started building my season, I was like, ‘Alright. Episode 5. Werewolf by Night.’ The idea of our story was that Howard was trapped here and he was trying to get pages of the Darkhold, which would allow him to go back. There’s Howard as I’m laying it out and then I go into Jeph and told him what I wanted to do, and that’s when they said ‘You can’t use Werewolf by Night,’ and I asked why. They said the movie division was using him.
Werewolf by Night has been a long-time supporting character of Moon Knight, where it was first seen in Werewolf by Night #32. It was introduced in Marvel Spotlight #2 in February 1972 and has since been seen in Ultimate Spider-Man, Hulk, and Agents of S.M.A.S.H.
Werewolf by Night largely captures the life of a man who is cursed to turn into a werewolf due to his family history. But unfortunately, this character has never seen the limelight. Considering how his contemporary Moon Knight is all set for a release under the flagship of Disney+, where we will see Oscar Issac playing the lead. We can only hope that Werewolf by Night might also see the small screen soon.
But for all those fans who never lose hope, here are some ways in which we can see Werewolf by Night.
Multiverse brings with itself abundant of possibility and we see no harm in speculating that Werewolf by Night might also be part of this madness. Considering Wanda Maximoff currently holds possession of Darkhold, which we can see at the end of WandaVision. One might think it will be key in the story of Werewolf by Night as it contains the origin of the curse of Werewolf. Hence Werewolf by Night might make an appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Another likely place for our character to pop up is the movie Blade, which might support the popular Vampires vs Werewolf conflict.
Lastly, we cannot forget that Moon Knight might also have a place for Werewolf by Night. Considering they have gone hand in hand before.
With the upcoming crossover of Tv series with Marvel films, the boundaries have been expanded and new characters are being added to the mix. When characters like Throg, Flag-Smasher, Yelena are being introduced we can only hope that Werewolf by Night might also get its moment to shine.
