A Tale of Two Transfers: Ekitike Shines While Wirtz Draws Heavy Fire at Anfield
Arne Slot’s Liverpool showcased their firepower in a resounding 4-1 victory over Newcastle at Anfield, a match that perfectly captured the contrasting fortunes of their recent big-money signings. After Anthony Gordon put the Magpies ahead early, 23-year-old striker Hugo Ekitike flipped the script with a lightning-fast double. Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konate piled on in the second half to secure the three points. Yet, the aftermath of the game has focused almost entirely on the wildly different trajectories of Ekitike and Wirtz, two massive acquisitions brought in from the German Bundesliga just last summer.
The Absolute Real Deal
Ekitike is turning out to be an absolute revelation for the Reds. Brought in for £79 million from Eintracht Frankfurt, the Frenchman has already netted 10 times in Premier League play, bringing his total haul to 15 across all competitions. Many expected him to play a supporting role when Liverpool also splashed cash on British record signing Alexander Isak. That myth has been completely blown out of the water. Since Isak suffered a broken leg in early December, Ekitike has shouldered the goalscoring burden with ease, cementing himself as the club’s leading scorer and primary threat up top.
James Pearce of The Athletic didn’t hold back his praise on talkSPORT’s Inside Liverpool, likening the youngster’s blistering start to Fernando Torres’s legendary 2007 debut season. Ekitike’s second goal against Newcastle was practically a carbon copy of Torres’s famous first strike against Chelsea. Latching onto a pass from Milos Kerkez out on the left flank, he burned right past defender Malick Thiaw before driving a clinical finish into the far corner. According to Pearce, the young forward has everything you want in a center forward, combining raw pace and power with a combative edge and a relentless work ethic.
It feels like it has been a long time since Liverpool had a true number nine like him. Roberto Firmino was a crucial gear in the Klopp era, but he operated more as a false nine rather than a prolific scorer. Darwin Nunez brought chaos but ultimately proved too erratic. Even Luis Suarez took a relatively slow start to find his footing before his monstrous 2013-14 campaign. Ekitike, however, is delivering right out of the gate. Hitting the 25-goal mark this season is well within his reach.
The €125 Million Puzzle
Things aren’t looking nearly as bright for Florian Wirtz, even with his second-half goal in the Newcastle rout. Liverpool shelled out a staggering €125 million to bring the 22-year-old phenom over from Bayer Leverkusen, but he has largely failed to replicate his Bundesliga magic. Through 38 appearances across all competitions, Wirtz has managed a rather pedestrian six goals and eight assists. It’s a return that is starting to draw heavy criticism from the media.
Former Scottish international and current ESPN analyst Craig Burley recently unloaded on the midfielder, demanding an end to the excuses. Burley didn’t mince words, calling Wirtz an “absolute lightweight” in the current Liverpool squad. He pointed out a glaring lack of conviction in the final third, questioning where the dazzling dribbles, defense-splitting passes, and mesmerizing runs from his Leverkusen days have gone. The production simply hasn’t matched the price tag. Burley went as far as suggesting that if Wirtz can’t figure things out in his preferred number 10 role soon, Liverpool’s front office needs to seriously consider cutting their losses and putting him on the transfer block.
