    Key Takeaways

    • President Trump announced a US Navy blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, effective Monday at 10 a.m. ET
    • S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures declined approximately 0.5–0.7%; Dow futures plummeted 580 points at session lows
    • Brent crude soared as much as 9%, breaking above $100 per barrel
    • Iranian officials denounced the move as “an act of piracy” and warned of retaliation against Gulf ports
    • Goldman Sachs leads off bank earnings reports on Monday

Stock futures tumbled Monday morning following President Donald Trump’s directive for the US Navy to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil transportation.

In a Truth Social post, Trump declared: “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.” The naval operation was scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. ET Monday.

BREAKING: President Trump is looking at resuming "limited military strikes" in Iran in addition to the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, per WSJ.

    Details include:

    1. Trump could also resume a full-fledged bombing campaign, though officials said that was less likely

The directive followed the weekend collapse of diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad. The failed talks dashed hopes that had propelled markets to their strongest weekly performance of 2026.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged as much as 580 points during early trading before moderating to approximately 300 points lower, representing a 0.7% decline. Both S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures retreated in the 0.5% to 0.7% range.

Crude markets experienced dramatic volatility following the announcement. Brent crude surged as much as 9%, nearly touching $104 per barrel before settling slightly above $101. West Texas Intermediate futures climbed more than 8%, exceeding $104 per barrel.

Tehran’s response was swift and forceful, with Iranian officials pledging to strike all Persian Gulf ports should their energy infrastructure face attack. Iranian authorities characterized the blockade as “an act of piracy.”

Inflation Concerns Mount as Energy Costs Climb

The sharp increase in oil prices reignited worries about inflationary pressures. Elevated energy expenses typically ripple through the broader economy, potentially dampening consumer expenditure and overall economic expansion.

Gold futures declined 0.7% to settle at $4,756 per ounce. The greenback strengthened 0.3% versus a basket of international currencies. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield inched higher by one basis point to 4.33%.

The major equity benchmarks had recently concluded their strongest weeks of 2026, buoyed by a tenuous ceasefire that now faces serious challenges. Market strategists indicated that traders were recalibrating equity valuations amid uncertainty about when the Middle East tensions might resolve.

“Anytime there is a repricing in markets, we see volatility,” said Clark Bellin, president of Bellwether Wealth.

Yet some market observers highlighted that futures had recovered from their worst levels, indicating investors maintained some optimism for diplomatic resolution.

    First Quarter Earnings Reports Launch

Market focus was simultaneously shifting toward the opening of first quarter corporate earnings. Goldman Sachs was scheduled to release its quarterly results Monday.

JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Morgan Stanley were all slated to report throughout the week. Netflix and PepsiCo earnings were also on the calendar.

The Strait of Hormuz represents a narrow channel separating Oman from Iran. Approximately 20% of global oil supplies transit through this waterway, establishing it as an essential chokepoint in worldwide energy distribution.
