MWC Shanghai: ZTE Announces Second-Gen In-display Selfie Camera, 3D Face Unlock

ZTE launched Axon 20 5G, the world’s first smartphone with an in-display selfie camera, back in September 2020. However, hands-on experience with the phone’s new camera tech was a bit underwhelming. But now, the Chinese technology company has announced its second-gen in-display selfie camera tech at the MWC Shanghai 2021 conference. Hopes are on the new tech that could improve the camera performance in upcoming devices. However, second-gen in-display camera tech is not just what ZTE has revealed. The company has revealed a new 3D face unlock solution during the conference.

According to an official Weibo post from ZTE, the second generation of its in-display camera solution brings significant improvements. The Chinese tech and innovation giant has said that it has increased the pixel density of the screen above the selfie camera from 200ppi to 400ppi. It is almost double the previous solution. ZTE claims that the upgraded solution offers a more consistent experience with the rest of the phone screen.

However, the post suggests that it has fixed the hazy effect that appeared on the Axon 20 5G above the selfie camera. That’s all we currently know about the new and upgraded in-display camera solution from ZTE. But, there’s more the company has announced at the MWC Shanghai.

Alongside the upgraded in-display camera tech, ZTE also showcased an under-screen 3D structured light scanner during the MWC Shanghai event. This is in fact the world’s first under-screen 3D structured light scanner, which will provide a 3D face unlock facility on phones without the need for any hole-punch cutout or waterdrop-style notch. Not just the face unlock, the company boasts that this tech could be helpful for augmented reality, 3D modeling, and payment solutions.

Since this is just a beginning and there’s always a space for improvement and innovation. So we should learn more about these new technologies in near future, especially when these power the upcoming devices.
