Earlier this year, Google announced that its latest mobile operating system, Android 12, will let users unlock compatible vehicles with just their phone. Now, the tech giant has finally launched Digital Car Key on the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S21 series phones with Android 12. That said, you can now simply use your phone to unlock and start your compatible car.
The Mountain View-based software giant took to Twitter to announce the launch of the digital car key on its Pixel 6 series and Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series. The company said that the feature is first coming to BMW cars. However, it will soon be available to more smartphones running Android 12 and more cars. With the digital car key, you can lock, unlock, and start your car from your Android phone.
Android Digital Car Key on Pixel 6, Galaxy S21: How to Set It Up?
According to the Google support page, Digital Car Key is currently only available for select vehicles and works with the Pixel 6 series phones and select Android devices that run Android 12. To set it up on your phone, your device must be connected to the internet. As of now, digital car keys are rolling out today on Galaxy S21 and Pixel 6 series for compatible 2020 and 2022 BMW models.
To set up the digital car key, first of all, you need to open the digital car key email from your car manufacturer. Now, tap Add to Android within the email. However, if this is your first time, you’ll be prompted to update your device before starting the pairing process. Follow the instructions while adding a digital car key to your Android and then download the companion app from your car manufacturer. You can follow similar instructions on the car’s companion app.
