DC is also dipping its villains into the tv-series business after Marvel decided to go with Loki as its lead. With Peacemaker as the lead of the show and John Cena stepping into the limelight, HBO Max has already given a straight-to-series yes to this villain-centric show. Eight seasons of the series are already on the board, with its first season, even before the release of The Suicide Squad as its parent movie.
A year before The Suicide Squad-Rebellion was even released, director James Gunn had already confirmed a spin-off in the form of Peacemaker a Tv-series. Which makes us think that they are very confident about the success of The Suicide Squad. And seeing that the first movie in the franchise had such a huge success and the critics amazing rating of the pre-premiere shows The Suicide Squad, you can hardly blame them.
Peacemaker would see James Gunn as its writer and director, former director of Guarding of the Galaxy Vol 2, Peter Safran ( The producer of The Suicide Squad) as executive producer, Cena (Actor in movies like Trainwreck, Blockers and Bumblebee, producer, wrestler, and host) as co-executive producer and lead actor.
When asked about what one can expect from Peacemaker, these are some of the answers that were given-
“The Peacemaker is an interesting character because his ego seems contradictory,” “He is this guy who has developed this philosophy and he can use it as a blanket to behave badly: ‘I am doing this thing that is morally wrong but I am doing it in the name of peace so it’s okay.’ He views himself as a superhero but I think a lot of us would watch his actions and think that they’re morally wrong.
Says John Cena
“I would venture to say that Peacemaker actually turns up the volume on anything that you see in The Suicide Squad, I want people to enjoy The Suicide Squad and I really think they will. Once they get a feel for these characters they’re going to want more and that’s where Peacemaker picks up.”
Says the wrestler
Initially, James Gunn wanted Dave Bautista to play the role of Peacemaker, seeing that he knocked it out of the park with, Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy, but the actor instead decided to play the lead in Army of the Dead.
But Cena was handpicked by him later and James Gunn seemed to be very happy with his choice.
The supporting cast would include, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt from The Suicide Squad, and Freddie Stroma as Vigilante.
The exact plot of the series is still not known to us, But it is being speculated that the series will take you back to the origins of Peacemaker.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere on Aug 6, 2021, with its plot of the revival of Task Force X and a new band of villains and misfits fighting to save the world. The Peacemaker would be released after that on January 2022.
It will be fun to see Cena play the character first in The Suicide Squad and then the Peacemaker series. We cant wait to have look!
