As the first quarter of this year is about to end, rumors about the next Google Pixel phone have begun to swirl already. Google recently released the Android 12 Developer Preview 3 build for developers and a lot about the upcoming Pixel phone has been revealed. The Android 12 Developer Preview has confirmed that the next Google Pixel will indeed be called the “Pixel 5a.” Rounding up from the recent rumors and information from the Android 12 Developer Preview, we have plenty of details about the upcoming phone from Google. Here’s what we know about the upcoming Google Pixel 5a.
The next Google Phone is “Pixel 5a 5G”
Android 12 Developer Preview had hints about “Pixel 5a” as Google’s next phone, but now, the tech giant has confirmed that its upcoming phone will indeed be called the “Pixel 5a 5G.” Recently, a photo allegedly captured on the Pixel 5a camera was accidentally shared by Google, suggesting the phone is still in the works. The phone may launch sometime later this year.
The codename of the Phone
As per the reports, the codename for Google Pixel 5a has been found in the Android 12 Developer Preview as “Barbet.” Barbet is a type of fish that matches the theme of Pixel codenames, suggesting the device would internally be called “Barbet.” Interestingly, this codename has also been found in version 8.2 of the Google Camera app.
Model Number of Pixel 5a
Another major detail that we have about the next Google Pixel phone is its model number. As per tipster Mukul Sharma, the upcoming Google Pixel 5a will have the model number GR0M2, which was reportedly discovered in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification received by phone. However, Google has said that the phone will first only launch in the US and Japan, despite being registered for approval in India.
Pixel 5a Will Feature Snapdragon Chip
Earlier this month, we learned that this fall’s Pixel 6 will be using Google’s own custom-made Whitechapel GS101 chip. But according to 9to5Google, files in Android 12 DP3 suggest that the Pixel 5a 5G will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G. This means that we won’t see the Google-made chipset on the Pixel 5a 5G, which anyway wasn’t claimed either.
For now, this is what we know about Google’s next phone — the Google Pixel 5a 5G, and it’s speculated to launch sometime in the middle of this year.
